This place is getting bigger all the time. Wrightwood Vintage Antiques and Oddities has two floors full of treasures plus they are spilling out into their backyard and shed. Furniture, collectibles, jewelry, and all kinds of quirky items abound from many eras. On a recent pass through what caught my eye was the funky insects made from old light bulbs, the large collection of salt and pepper shakers, and the bargain bin "junk" stacks outside which inspired me to get into some creative "up-cycling" projects. My husband spent some time looking through the vintage records and paused at the old beer signs, ever in search of acquisitions for his man cave. You never know what you'll find there, and it's certainly worth some time wandering. The event that changed our lives forever, the Wrightwood Annual Classic Car Show, is coming to town this Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013. In the summer of 2009 we came up to camp near Wrightwood, and stopped to eat at the Car Show on our way back home to the flatlands. We'd been coming up to ski at Mountain High for a couple years and had dreamt of owning a little ski cabin but they were too expensive when we'd looked into it before the global financial crisis of 2008. At the Car Show we happened to sit next to a woman who worked with the Wrightwood Chamber, and we got to chatting about the town. She told us about how the real estate prices had crashed -- bad news for the town but good news to us. When we got home we started looking at Wrightwood realty. Less than 48 hours later we went back up to look at properties, and even put in our first offer that day (unfortunately outbid). Within a couple weeks we were in escrow on our cabin, and the rest, as they say, is history. Since that day we've purchased two other homes in Wrightwood, one that we live in full time since we fell in love with the town too much to go back to the flatlands after our ski weekends, and another cabin that was just too good a deal to pass up. So go to the Classic Car Show this weekend -- you never know, it could change your life! After a successful shopping venture at the Wrightwood Farmers Market, we decided to drop our bags of organic sprouts, just-laid-yesterday fresh eggs, and multi-colored heirloom tomatoes for an alfresco dinner at Blue Ridge Inn. I realized that we had only eaten there during cold months when their wooden interior, fireplace, and dim lighting made the place cozily inviting for a warm and romantic meal. But sitting outside by the lilac bushes on a summery evening was quite delightful! I ordered the special, a lightly seared tuna with a ginger sauce -- perfectly done, the kind of meal you remember fondly for a long time. Blue Ridge is the most expensive restaurant in town, and well worth every dime. I highly recommend it, whether for a pleasant alfresco meal in the summer or a warm and cozy date in the winter. Since I had a promo code to get a free photo book from Shutterfly, I threw together a quick project from some of my pictures of Wrightwood that I had handy. Check it out: Click here to view this photo book larger Shutterfly offers exclusive layouts and designs so you can make your book just the way you want. Canadian hip-hop star Ess filmed the music video for his song "After April Comes May" at our cabins in Wrightwood. Here's a peek at the shoot: Yesterday while it thundered in the flat-lands and rained in Wrightwood, it snowed at Mt. High, just a few miles UP the street (literally, of course!). There's not enough snow to ski, but hopefully this early snow is a good sign that we'll have a good season, and an early season opening. The temperatures have certainly dropped this week, making it cold enough for making snow at Mt. High -- and cold enough for big cozy fires at the cabin!
